Ever since we have learned about advertising techniques in class, I have been more attentive while watching commercials, movies, and even my favorite TV shows. The result has been shocking- everything that we are presented with on TV is an advertising technique. On my favorite show, Grey's Anatomy, they fail to blur out the Lexus symbol on Meredith's car, and she consistently mentions Lexus- but on AFV, all logos are blurred. On the Leinenkrugels commercial, they call their beer " the taste of summer"- when in reality, it isn't. Perfume commercials have never looked so silly to me. Companies are trying to get us to relate to them (or appreciate them) and build a relationship with their product, which causes us to buy their product. I will sub-consciously associate a Lexus with my favorite show, and with my favorite character- that is human nature. I will remember that "the taste of summer" is lemon-infused beer. Advertising couldn't get any more manipulative of my emotions- but makeup ads surpass the level of manipulative. Under ever mascara ad is the phrase "lash extensions used"- so they aren't even advertising their own mascara! They advertise the look of long lashes, and promise that with their mascara, even thought image shown of the models eyelashes isn't with their own product. Hair ads cater this same deception- their models always have shiny and effortlessly wavy hair- but in a recent commercial, Suave released all of its tricks to achieving that perfect hair- most of time, models are wearing extensions, and green screens cover the people proding at the extensions to make it flow in mid-air. It's almost as if advertisers don't need to advertise their own product, but they only have to promote the idea around it. After watching The Persuaders in class, I have become more attentive to this. I brushed off the annoying ads- but now, I see right through the deceptive messages.

I can relate to this so much. I see car adds in some of my favorite shows and I never realized that it was an advertisement until I associated the character with that car. The advertising gets me to create a relationship with it. It is very smart of them, but creepy to think that adds can do so much.
