The British Royals- An American Obsession?// blog 14

If you've been living in a cave, and you haven't hear about the royal wedding, here is a summary. Meghan Markle, and American actress, married Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth and the son of the most photographed woman in the world, Princess Diana. Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to St. George's Chapel in Windsor to witness the extravagant royal wedding. But- is the love mutual? Do Americans fuel the royal obsession from overseas? Do the Brits even like it?

The answer is simple- no, they don't. Many British folk have revealed that their taxes paid for every part of the royal wedding- from the crown and dress Markle wore to the flowers that donned the front of the chapel. They believe that the Americans are the only thing upholding the years-old tradition. So, in the end, it is the American obsession fueling the publicity of the wedding. Taxpayers were enraged by the fact that they paid for the wedding and reception, but they were not given priority viewing to Americans, nor were they invited. Many Americans feel the same way about when Trump takes Air Force One to his resort in Florida, or when he is playing golf- we pay for his flight, his security, etc. However, we fail to recognize that the wedding is quite literally a parallel to this spending. Americans, though, don't have to pay for it. We get to enjoy seeing one of our own marry a royal at the expense of the British taxpayers. Surely, if there was the lack of demand for the royal family to exist, it would cease to exist. Americans keep fueling the fire that British so desperately want to put out-
and maybe we should listen.

  1. Actually the royal family payed for the wedding themselves, which is unknown to s lot of people. I think that the British seek comfort in the royal family as they set the tone for the country they represent. I too thought the royal family seemed outdated however the majority of Brits surprisingly favor having the royal family.

    1. Well I am pretty sure that my research is conclusive in that the taxpayer money was used to pay for the wedding, and I think majority is a strong word when many people have shown dissatisfaction in the royals, but I see what you are in saying in the point that they set the tone for their country and I agree with that. Thanks!
