Why Cristina Yang is so Interesting / blog 6

As many people know, I am completely basic so I love Grey's Anatomy. One character that stood out to me, while she was on the show, was Christina Yang, played by Sandra Oh. She began as an intern at Seattle Grace, but then (spoiler alert) became a cardiothoracic surgeon and director at a major hospital in Sweden, where she was reunited (coincidentally) with her ex-husband, who gave her the job. While this may sound like a cliche hero's journey, there is so much more to Cristina Yang that captivated audiences around the world.
Cristina Yang is so complex, that it forces us to think about who she is and why she acts a certain way- all. the. time. She manages to achieve so much and makes so few mistakes in the operating room, but she is so complex- behind the books and her knowledge, she is a person who craves a normal life, but has so many limitations and expectations that she can't live a life she wants to. Her mind pushes her forward in her career, but completely sets her back as well.
I feel like many of us have that same experience as well. We are so strong in one field, but struggle in another that so many people seem to do well in. That's the way life works sometimes, and her struggle as a person is a prime example of this.
We can relate to Cristina Yang, and yet many people (including myself) are so puzzled by her existence- so we kept watching to see how she will grow and what she will do next, until she exited the show a couple seasons ago.

  1. I don't watch Grey's, but this reflection of Christina is very insightful! I enjoyed how you spoke on her struggles and perseverance on a deeper level, as it is something that most people who watch TV are not concerned with. I also could relate to many of the things you discussed as not being confident in one aspect of my life, but being good in another.
